Inter 4.0: A Big Font Update for UI Design

There’s a new font in town … Inter! “What?!” I hear you say, “That overused Google Font? New?” – Yes, in a way, because the update to Inter 4.0 is worth being explored. It is brining three exciting changes with them that make Inter look a bit less like … Inter.

I explore these updates:

  1. True Italics makes it better for copy
  2. Optical Sizing improves it for large text
  3. New stylistic alternates give you more options

I also cover why the font is not on Google Fonts and how I think about the changes. Explore it in greater detail by watching the video or reading my Font Friday review, where you will also find some suggested font pairings. Here you can get Inter 4.0.

  1. Waiting for the popular movement refusing to use Inter to hit the streets!

Framer websites by default use Inter 4.0, which leads to a lot of similar looking text! I will probably use it for UI and text in small sizes when clients don’t have much or any room in the budget for typography, which is probably better spent on an interesting typeface for headlines. Do you agree?

    1. I absolutely agree, Jasper! It makes a lot of sense to invest in your brand and uniqueness and a striking headline font is definitely more attention grabbing, since UI text should be more restrained anyway.
